I pull out my tiny journal.

I close my eyes and take a few deep breaths.

And then I ask myself what I need most today and what I need to offer those around me the most today.

This is how I start most of my mornings — right after that first sip of coffee.

But there’s another part of my Rise and Shine morning ritual that I haven’t talked much about and that’s my morning mantra.

I love to start my day with a strong, relevant mantra that just sets the tone for a joyful day.

When we wake up our mind is open and aware of much more than we realize. We can find ourselves in a state of mind that just wants to shut the world away. We want to crawl back into bed or at least hide in some quiet corner for a while.

I had to laugh at a friend’s wish the other weekend. She said she wants to live in a tiny house. I asked her, “where will you spend your mornings when you wake up?”

She thought about it for a few minutes.

And then realized that she needs space in the mornings.

And I couldn’t agree more. I need space. Quiet. And a real mantra to sink my teeth into to guide me through my day.

And, if we aren’t, careful, we’ll completely blow it with a single negative thought that sets us on a downward spiral. I’ve seen this happen firsthand. Moms who instantly start their day with negatives, drama and shoulds that don’t feel good encounter a day that runs out of control with more drama and more negativity.

If we want a joyful day, we have to begin with a joyful mindset and a mantra is a great way to get that started.

  2. What a wonderful day. I’ve never seen this one before! (learned from Brother David Steindl-Rast — my favorite!)
  3. Let’s do this!
  4. Thankful for another day.

  6. I am ready for anything.
  7. May I be strong and fearless — and totally alive.
  8. Soften into this day.
  9. Seek the beauty in every moment.
  10. And this. All this.
