Feeding Our Egos as Mothers: An Interview with Author Karen Maezen Miller

Feeding Our Egos as Mothers: An Interview with Author Karen Maezen Miller

As moms, just how much of what we do really is about US?

We’re often faced with societal pressures to be something we’re not. To do things we think are the right thing to do. We put a lot of emphasis on the shoulds … coulds … and maybes.

In this 7th episode of Amplify Your Life, I’m talking with Karen Maezen Miller, a Zen priest and author of three books, including Momma Zen.

And she admits — and I confess, too — that much of our roles in motherhood are really about our own egos.

In this 7th episode of Amplify Your Life, Maezen and I discuss motherhood, mindfulness, meditation — and anger.

I really wanted to talk with her about anger because I’ve always admired her frank conversations around it, that even SHE — a Zen Priest — gets angry.

And she offers some really great advice on how to handle anger in motherhood.

But we also talk about how she feels like everything she wrote in her first book, Momma Zen, was based on her young years as a mother and now that she has a teenager, she’s back to learning all over again.

“What can I say, I’m sorry. I was wrong.” she says, laughing.

Of course, we talk about how we change as mothers, and how we’re all doing our best with what we’ve got — and how our children are who they are and there’s little we can do to change them.

We also talk about fear, doing nothing and the secrets of meditation.

And we talk about anger in motherhood and life and how to cope with it. Resources mentioned in this podcast are below.

I have arrived. I am home

There isn’t anything much better than the feeling of a clean slate. That’s what the New Year provides. I have long given up on resolutions — mostly because I write and create “goals” all year long. I’m someone who is always trying to change myself, my intentions, my situation. I’m someone who spends life searching for the next… Continue Reading
