{Project 52} Rise early

rise early coffee cup2This is Week 4 of Project 52: Stay Awake. Welcome to anyone who is new. You can get caught up with us pretty quickly by reading from the beginning.

“Be willing to be a beginner every single morning.” ~ Meister Eckhart

It was a weekend morning, a morning most people desire to lay in bed and sleep in.

I woke with a start.

Ready to get up.

I shuffled my feet down the stairs and into the kitchen for a glass of water and grabbed my notebook and a Sharpie.mornings2

All my best work comes from a Sharpie these days.

Then I began writing in the candlelit dark.

For two hours, I let the silence wash over me and my brain let go of all the junk that had been fogging up my ability to make good decisions, to make sense and to have some clarity.

Nearly 10 pages of scribbles, doodles, notes, lists and brainstorms later, I was renewed.

One thought flowed to the next exactly as I needed them to — naturally, without pause or needs or demands. Just me. Just my thoughts, my worries.

And then, when it was all over, I drank a cup of coffee and had a great day.

This is absolutely, hands down, my biggest tip I can offer any busy parent. If you can sneak out of bed and do one thing for yourself before the day begins, it opens your eyes and your heart in new ways.

Of course, I must fully admit that I’ve been dating 4:30 a.m. for quite a while now. Rather than get upset and annoyed at this insomnia, of sorts, I go with it. I use it to my advantage.

This week, your prompt for Project 52: Stay Awake is simply to Rise Early. Rise early and see what greets you. Follow your natural flow to do anything you want. It’s your time. Make the best of it. Do not spend that time on other people. Spend it on yourself.

beryl aynPHOTO TIP FROM BERYL: Some of the best photos I’ve taken were the ones I planned out ahead of time and shot with intention. What special moments do you desire to capture this week? Take a few minutes, early riser, and write down 5 photo ideas for the week. Then plan to make them happen.

What about you? What are your best mornings like? Could your life benefit an extra 15, 20 or even 30 minutes of quiet in the morning?

  1. I actually just started waking up a little earlier last week and spending.about 15 minutes reading before getting the family up. It has been wonderful & I feel so much more relaxed starting the day.

  2. Starting tonight, I will start showering and doing hair stuff BEFORE bed. Then, I'll get up 20 minutes early and start yoga once and for all…I keep promising myself I was going to heal my back and I just haven't done it. The only tricky part is that I wake up at 5:15 for work as it is. Images to come!

  4. I am a night owl and usually wake up after my girls do! I so wish I was a morning person! I may have to give waking up early a try this week!

  5. Hi there ! This is my first time with you and I love the idea of waking up earlier and take time for me. Not easy, I have to admit. I am already waking up at 5:15 to shower and have breakfast before the kids wake up for school…but I can try this week-end. Yoga sounds a great idea to start the day :-)

  6. I usually get up at 4. And by usually I mean, anytime I am not 13 weeks pregnant and seem to be dead tired all the time. I get dressed, have a walk, shower when I get back and do my yoga and meditation. By 6 I am done and Erin rises as well, although we are trying to get her to wake up her father first, rather than come storming in looking for her mother. So far, we have had as much luck as not. Anyway, I would really like to write in the morning as well, along with reading up on some of my yoga studies, etc. But for all of that to happen, I would probably have to get up at 2 or something. Now THAT is never going to happen ;).
