“Look, Mommy, the geese are sleeping on the ice,” my daughter sings out in the car on our way from school and work.

I glance to the pond on my left and black mounds of feathers are dotting the large pond. The hard ice is decorated with the very geese that, when the weather is warmer, we have to stop and wait for as they one-by-one cross this urban street.

Today, though, I stop for another reason.

“Let’s take a look at them up close,” I tell the girls, who beamed at the sudden change in our routine.

Still wearing school uniforms and heels we walk through the squishy mud to get to the pond. Our shoes still bear witness to that day.

As we quietly approach the geese, we see their feathers and how their legs are tucked under as they sleep on the frigid ice — close enough to take a swim in the small open area yet far enough away to not fall in.

These geese have become characters in our daily life.

Each day we look for them like “Where’s Waldo” but like a real game of hide and seek.

“They’re gone!” my daughters shouted one very cold day on our way into school.

Then we began a story about where they might have gone and why.

A typical day after work is rush home, change clothes, do homework, play and eat dinner.

But when a dozen geese are sleeping on ice that’s not a typical day. Or when you see a double rainbow, that’s not a typical day.

Those days, everything inside me tells me to stop everything and throw out the routine. Toss out the ordinary.

These are the moments in life that matter more than any other.

These are the very times when we must embrace the moment.

And when I do, I never regret it.

Not ever.Project 52 Week 6 Embrace the Moment
Your Project 52 Prompt: Embrace the Moment.

Snap a photo of a moment that you completely surrender to this week — perhaps not planned, perhaps a little surprising, even to you.

beryl aynBeryl’s Photo TipCarry a camera with you this week wherever you go. It doesn’t matter what kind of camera it is — DSLR, point and shoot, or your camera phone — they will all work fine. The biggest thing about embracing a moment is being able to remember it. You never know when one of those picture worthy moment might strike, so the best thing you can do is to be prepared.

  1. What a great story. It’s so true we get caught up in rushing from one thing to another that we forget to stop and look at all the wonderful things around us. We have so much to teach our children and little moments like these are priceless.
