A Hundred Ways to Kiss the Ground

kiss the ground by Rumi

“Today, like every other day, we wake up empty
and frightened. Don’t open the door to the study
and begin reading. Take down a musical instrument.

Let the beauty we love be what we do.
There are hundreds of ways to kneel and kiss the ground.”

~ Rumi

How I kiss the ground …

When I stare in their eyes and hear every breath, every sound that comes from their body. When I watch him move and saunter from task to task and appreciate all that he does. When I stare at the pale blue sky and drift on a cloud for a while. When I knead dough to make homemade pizza with love and care.

When I stroke her hair, telling her she’ll feel better soon. When I sit on my meditation cushion and wait for the earth to hold all of my troubles. When I stand outside waiting for their bus to drop them off and breathe, asking myself what I need in that moment. While my heels sink into the cool grass and smell the wet leaves as they soak into the ground and begin a new cycle.

When I close my eyes and let the words dance across the page to nothing but the beat of my own heart or the wind blowing outside or the music in the distance. When I hit publish and release those words into the universe for others to read and cherish and consider. When I meet up with a good friend who makes me laugh and feel alive. When I turn up the music and start dancing for no reason — and they join in.

When I tuck them  with special handshakes and rhymes each night as I have for nearly eight years straight.

When I hear my own voice say yes when my whole body was just saying no. When I say yes to myself, to one more cup of coffee, to one more handful of trail mix with all the goodies in it, to one more book to read. When I listen to my own body and my own intuition.

The list could go on and on … How many ways do you kiss the ground?
